This lesson plan introduces biological evolution and genetic traits using experimentation based on Gregor Mendel’s investigation of the pea plant. Students also use the primary resource of Mendel’s “Experiments in Plant Hybridization,” written in 1865. The Pea Experiment is an online interactive where students can breed their own hybrid plants and discuss their results in class discussion. In addition to doing their own experimentation and reading of Mendel’s paper, students learn how to prepare for a seminar and how to participate in one.
