Mentoring Minds Integrates Critical Thinking with NGSS and STEM Science Learning in New Resource

Total Motivation Science for the Next Generation Fully Supports NGSS and STEM Approaches to Science Education
Publish date:

BOSTON – September 27, 2016 – As educators across the country implement the newly introduced science standards NGSS, national K-12 publisher Mentoring Minds announces Total Motivation Science for the Next Generation. Available for grade level 5, this newest addition to the award-winning Total Motivation family of innovative print-and-online supplemental curriculum integrates 21st-century critical thinking skills to deepen students’ understanding of science.

Developed by Mentoring Minds’ experienced team of science educators, Total Motivation Science for the Next Generation fully supports the NGSS, which are new K-12 science standards that have been developed to improve science education for all students. These research-based science standards are designed to give educators the flexibility to develop classroom learning experiences that stimulate students’ interest in science.

The high-impact lessons within Total Motivation Science for the Next Generation blend content knowledge with a variety of activities and applications. This supplemental resource contains content coded to NGSS performance expectations, disciplinary core ideas, crosscutting concepts, and science and engineering practices; Science, Technology, Society, and the Environment (STSE); Nature of Science; Engineering Design; and the state standards for Math and ELA. To incorporate an extra layer of rigor, all instructional activities across each of the science subjects are also coded to Depth of Knowledge (DOK) and Bloom’s Taxonomy (Original and Revised).

Because the NGSS represent a significant shift in science instruction and rigor, Mentoring Minds has also developed two half-day professional development trainings in order to support educators as they transition to this new teaching model. The trainings complement their newly released resource and prepare teachers for this pedagogical shift, providing instruction on the NGSS and how Total Motivation Science for the Next Generation dovetails with the new standards.

“Total Success with Total Motivation” provides professional development coaching and product implementation support for educators, remote or in person. “Uncovering NGSS Mysteries” delves into NGSS pedagogical methods and provides a model for what three-dimensional learning looks like in the classroom. This training bridges the gap between traditional state science standards and the integrated learning and active, hands-on approach promoted by the NGSS. As one fourth grade teacher in California said after attending a training, “The rigor in Mentoring Minds is much better, much deeper than anything I’ve seen. It’s not formulaic.

Karen Lane, M.Ed., lead science editor at Mentoring Minds, says Total Motivation Science for the Next Generation provides a powerful multi-dimensional classroom experience for students and teachers.

“The concepts found in Total Motivation Science for the Next Generation are specifically designed to give students a rigorous, three-dimensional learning experience that engages them in learning science phenomena through investigation and problem solving, scientific exploration and making connections to the wonders of science in the world around them,” said Lane. “The Teacher Edition offers a variety of options for developing tailored instructional plans that will help bring science to life in the classroom, all while promoting deeper levels of critical thinking.”

In addition to comprehensively supporting the NGSS, Total Motivation Science for the Next Generation is built on the 5E Model of Learning and encourages students to view science, technology, engineering, and math as interdependent to develop STEM connections. The pre-assessments, formative assessments, self-assessment, and post-assessments inform instruction and are available in a variety of formats such as open-response, multiple-response, multiple-choice, and hands-on performance assessments. The online component, Motivation Online, provides up-to-the minute progress reports to help educators quickly address knowledge gaps at the classroom, school, and district levels, or for a specific group or individual.

“We are focused on developing for the standards and providing educators with the necessary instruction, resources, and support to ensure their success in teaching those standards. Our goal is to help teachers equip students to perform at their highest levels. We developed this product to help educators with the challenge of implementing the vision of the NGSS and the Framework for K-12 Science Education,” said Robert Bush, CEO of Mentoring Minds.

Total Motivation Science for the Next Generation joins the Total Motivation line of innovative print-and-online supplemental curriculum resources, which are already available for Math and ELA. Rigorous and aligned to state standards, Total Motivation is flexible enough to fit any scope and sequence but rigorous enough to drive instructional design on its own. Online progress monitoring and a wealth of instructional strategies empower educators to provide quality instruction. For more information, visit Mentoring Minds.
