K-12 Districts Across Illinois Choose the Performance Matters Calibration Tool to Ensure Objective Performance Evaluations and Meet Evaluator Retraining Requirements

Several school districts across Illinois are adding the Performance Matters Calibration Tool to better measure observer accuracy and improve inter-rater reliability in education evaluations.

Sandy, Utah — July 12, 2017 — In Illinois, individuals who conduct teacher and principal evaluations must be recertified every five years. To simplify evaluator retraining and facilitate precise, standardized results throughout the evaluation process, school districts across Illinois are turning to the Performance MattersCalibration tool.

Created in partnership with Teaching Learning Solutions, the Performance Matters Calibration tool helps districts measure observer accuracy and improve inter-rater reliability to create consistency and fairness in educator evaluations. Illinois districts that have implemented the Calibration tool thus far include Bloomington Public Schools District 87, Crete-Monee School District 201-U, Galesburg Community Unit School District 205, Moline School District 40, Round Lake Area School District 116, Summit Hill School District 161, and West Aurora School District 129.

“Previously, we were handling the calibration process on our own, but we realized we could only go so far with that approach. There were also major technical issues with the system we used to use for evaluator retraining,” said Cindy Helmers, assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction for Bloomington Public Schools District 87.

In 2015, the district began using the Calibration tool, along with the Performance MattersProfessional Development solution. “With Performance Matters, we can take charge of our inter-rater reliability and calibration process, and be more proactive in meeting our evaluators’ needs. The Calibration tool is user friendly, the quality of the training videos is excellent, and we can use the tool with our own evaluation framework and rubrics,” said Helmers. “Another benefit is that we can measure evaluators’ skills and provide retraining on a regular basis, instead of doing this only once every five years.”
