Product Review: Fluency Finder

By David Kapuler

Product Title: FluencyFinder (iOS App - www.fluencyfinder.com)

Retail Price: $6.99FluencyFinder is a reading assessment tool designed for iOS devices. It's an ideal app for teachers assessing reading levels of grades 1- 5, as well as special ed and ESL/EFL/ELL. Grades 6 - 8 are slated for the next update in the iTunes App Store. This is great for schools and classrooms, where teachers can assess students’ reading fluency rate with just a few taps on the screen. Once a reading passage is completed, the user gets real-time results which are stored in the app for future reference. This process saves teachers time from testing and allows them to focus more on teaching.

Ease of Use
FluencyFinder is one of the easiest apps to use -- a teacher simply taps a [+] or [–] button to assess a student’s reading fluency rate. Also, there is a very useful video tutorial on the company’s website with a complete walk-through of how to use the app in a classroom.

Creative Use of Technology
Teachers download this app to their iOS device, print out reading passages from the FluencyFinder website, and they are good to go. Real-time results are available from the app.

Suitability for Use in a School Environment
FluencyFinder can be used in a wide variety of curriculum (Reading, Special Ed, ESL). I would like to see added the ability to create your own reading passages as well as the ability to email reports to parents or other teachers via tap of the button.

Top features:

  • Ease of use
  • Instant feedback/results
  • Wide variety of curriculum
