Oregon nonprofit brings proficiency model for teaching and learning to schools nationwide

BEC, an Oregon nonprofit tasked by the Department of Education to define proficiency for consistency in Oregon schools, has published the workbook, It’s About Time—A Framework for Proficiency-based Teaching & Learning.

The workbook provides educators with a set of rubrics that were field-tested and refined by more than 150 practicing teachers who identified the most critical elements of proficiency-based teaching and learning.

The framework focuses on important teacher components to break down learning concepts into manageable chunks of knowledge and skills. It provides each student with all of the support and interventions necessary to reach proficiency on learning standards. A variety of detailed elementary through high school scenarios describe what teachers, administrators, students and parents should expect to see and hear in classrooms where proficiency practices are being used.
