Museum of Natural History: Arctic Studies Center

The Arctic Crossroads region was peopled by indigenous groups in Siberia and Alaska. Explore this exhibit from the Smithsonian Institution that gives lots of information about where subgroups from this region lived, dressed, and practiced their religions and cultures. You’ll find maps, recordings of songs, photographs of how these Arctic inhabitants live today, and the challenges they face in a modern culture. Enter the Hall of the People to read about the several groups or enter the Hall of Masks to see the masks used in ceremonies in both parts of the Arctic Crossroads region. The masks reflect the traditions and functions of art.
