Wildfire! How a Scientist Investigates Annual Patterns of Fires

Publish date:

Fire science is so important in helping pinpoint where the forest fires might occur, and where to concentrate firefighting resources. On this site, discover what kinds of information land managers accumulate to help determine the potential for wildfire in an area. Using maps from August, 2001, students assess fire risk based on six particular physical conditions in five areas, make a hypothesis based on the data accumulated, and compare their ratings with the predictions made by the National Interagency Fire Center. At the end of the investigation are links to current conditions.

Fire Wars

Fire Wars Can you fight fire with fire? The brave men and women who work to stop forest fires do just that, and this simulation shows how it's done. It allows the user to decide where to put a fire break and a backfire in order to save a house that's about to be engulfed in flames. NOVA, Rick
