National Day of Writing

This year the fourth annual National Day of Writing falls on October 20. Use the ideas on this site from the National Council of Teachers of English to celebrate a day early or even to extend the celebration into next week. You can read about why the NCTE thought that honoring writing is so important, and find archived writings from past years in the gallery. Students will appreciate the tips for writers that include discussions on how to overcome writer’s block and deciding what to write about. Be sure to share the testimonials of familiar authors of children’s and young adult books where they talk about why they write. Help your students understand that writing is power.
