There are many ways dams are created and many reasons to build them. Use this lesson plan to examine the engineering behind dams before turning your students loose to construct a dam in the classroom using engineering principles, problem-solving, and teamwork. Objectives, procedure, student resources, and student worksheets are all provided, as well as a detailed list of the materials needed to test the best ideas coming from your budding hydrological engineers. As an extension activity have your students consider the ecological and ethical considerations of building dams.
